![]() ![]() 20 years ago, Christina Aguilera famously argued that her video for Dirrty, in which she mud wrestled, gyrated, foxy-boxed, and simulated masturbation while wearing a string bikini and assless chaps, was making a feminist statement because she was the star, not relegated to the background. While most of the criticism of the hot tub meta was deeply simplistic - like xQc calling it "trash" with almost zero elaboration - there is an argument to be had about the age and impressionability of the audience using Twitch, the way sex work (or at least, work adjacent to sex work) is unregulated, and how much responsibility streamers like Amouranth have in the face of feminism. Amouranth has also been accused of creating controversy in order to boost her other income streams, such as her OnlyFans, but she told us in a recent interview that this was not the case, and that every ban she receives is "incredibly stressful." While sitting in a hot tub is hardly hardcore porn, it is designed to titillate, and other streamers besides Amouranth charged nominal fees to write fans' names on their skin, further muddying the waters of the parasocial relationship streamers share with their audience. How could other streamers, who frequently play violent, 18 rated video games, swear, discuss explicit topics, and encourage gambling, complain with any credibility unregulated content being broadcast to minors? The only real critique was that this was sexualised content on a platform where sex work is unregulated and therefore potentially accessible to minors - but this complaint was rarely raised. There was also criticism that it didn't belong on Twitch, that the most viewed streams on a viewer driven streaming platform were somehow not what people wanted to watch. Sintica is the only other woman to join them in the top 100. ![]() In unrelated news, Pokimane and Amouranth are the only women to make the top 50 highest earners on Twitch. While men have to put in effort to find success as a streamer, women just have to show up. In many ways, it was barely disguised misogyny with the undertone that life for women online is somehow easier. Related: Tara Strong On Harley Quinn, Shipping, And Dealing With Brony BulliesĪt the time, I wrote about the hot tub meta and the nature of its criticism. Interestingly, given her latest venture, Amouranth's participation in the fart meta did not extend to actually farting, but instead to licking microphones and jumping up and down on her bed while dressed as Gwen Stacy wearing a horse head mask. This happened again when the hot tub meta was followed by the fart meta, for which Amouranth and IndieFoxx were temporarily banned from Twitch. Streamers who found success on Twitch away from video games specifically tend to be looked down upon by purists, and with the rise of the hot tub meta (essentially just people sitting in hot tubs, with Amouranth being the most popular), she earned another boost, in popularity, profile, and notoriety. Amouranth has been a highly successful streamer for a long time, mostly streaming in IRL or Just Chatting categories rather than video games. However, I'm not sure she's doing anything wrong, and I'm yet to hear any legitimate criticism that doesn't rotate back to being distaste for Amouranth specifically, usually with an undertone of general misogyny.įirst, let's see how we got here. As with anything Amouranth does, she's come under heavy criticism for selling her own bowel gas. And.Amouranth recently started selling her own farts in a jar, and because my job is both very real and very normal, I'm here to write a critical analysis of the lean-in feminism and hustle culture capitalism that swirls around the flatulence of a woman who plays video games on camera. Turns out she has a new side hustle now, and it will make you vomit, or at least pull every string of your hair. Must be a very likeable fella, right? Well, it's a little more complicated than that. She won a reality TV Show called 90 Day Fiancé, where unlikely people are paired together in order to see whether they can endure each other and walk down the aisle after spending three months together. Well, a whole new example of this is a girl named Stephanie Matto! People like and hate completely different things, and sometimes they may just be so bizarre, you may end up questioning your own existence. Now, as I cursed my luck in the world, when I grew a little older, things just started making a whole lot more sense. I mean, there was a time I went to the birthday party of a girl I kind of really liked, and well, I thought a box of expensive chocolates would be the perfect thing to gift.īut, to my surprise, it turned out that the girl was actually allergic to chocolates. As we grow up in this crazy world, we often realize that there are so many strange things that we really don't understand. ![]()
